Asghar Farhadi
Asghar Farhadi, born 7 May 1972, is an Iranian film director and screenwriter. He as a director has received many national and international awards such as Crystal Simorgh of Fajr International Film Festival; Golden Globe Award and Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film; and Golden Bear of Berlin International Film Festival. He was named one of the 100 Most Influential People in the world by Time magazine in 2012.

Farhadi was born in Homayounshahr (Khomeini Shahr), Province of Isfahan. He was graduated from Tehran University with a BA in Dramatic Arts major in theatre and from Tarbiat Modares University with a MA in Stage Direction. Farhadi, before moving on to writing screenplays, started to make short films, 8mm and 16mm, in the Iranian Young Cinema Society of the Isfahan branch. He also directed TV series such as A Tale of a City (Dastane yek Shahr) and co-wrote the screenplay for Ebrahim Hatamikia's Low Heights (Ertefae Past). His feature film debut was Dancing in the Dust (Raghs dar Ghobar), and was followed with Beautiful City (Shahr-e-Ziba), which both brought Farhadi recognition and won him awards at National and International Film Festivals.

Fireworks Wednesday (Chahrshanbeh Souri), the third feature film of Farhadi, won the Gold Hugo at the 2006 Chicago International Film Festival. His fourth film, About Elly (Darbareye Elly), won him the Silver Bear for Best Director at the 59th International Berlin Film Festival and also Best Picture at the Tribeca Film Festival.

His film Nader and Simin, A Separation (Jodaeiye Nader az Simin), widely known as "A Separation", premiered at the 29th Fajr International Film Festival in Tehran, on 9 February 2011, and received critical acclaim from the Iran Society of Film Critics. It won Farhadi four awards including Best Director, for the third time after Fireworks Wednesday and About Elly. On 15 February 2011, it also played in competition at the 61st Berlin International Film Festival, which earned him a Golden Bear for best film, becoming the first Iranian film to win that award. In June 2011, A Separation won the Sydney Film.

On 15 January 2012, A Separation won the Golden Globe for the Best Foreign Language Film. A Separation was also the official Iranian submission for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 2012 Academy Awards, where apart from getting nominated in this category, it also received a nomination in the Best Original Screenplay category.

Farhadi was a member of the jury for the 62nd Berlin International Film Festival, held in February 2012.

On 26 February 2012, A Separation became the first Iranian movie to have received an Oscar for the best foreign language film at the 84th edition of the Academy Awards. Asghar Farhadi is the first Iranian to have won an Academy Award in any of the competitive categories.

Farhadi's 2013 film The Past, starring Bérénice Bejo, Tahar Rahim and Ali Mosaffa, was nominated for the Palme d'Or at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival. Bérénice Bejo won the Best Actress Award at Cannes for her performance in the Farhadi's film.

His 2016 film The Salesman, starring Shahab Hosseini and Taraneh Alidoosti, competed for the Palme d'Or at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival, and won two Awards Best Actor and Best Screenplay Award for Farhadi. The Salesman was nominated for the Best Foreign Language film at the 89th Academy Awards and won the Oscar in 2017.
