A Celebrated Iranian Actress


Leila Hatamii
Leila Hatami, born October 1, 1972, is an Iranian actress. She is the daughter of director Ali Hatami and actress Zari Khoshkam.

After finishing high school, she moved to Lausanne, Switzerland and started her studies in electrical engineering at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne. After two years she changed her major to French literature. She completed her study of French before moving back to Iran. After a pause of a few, busy with her studies in Switzerland, she made her professional re-entry into cinema with Dariush Mehrjui's film Leila. Her acting in this film received very psitive reviews from critics and audiences.

She had a few short appearances during her childhood which includes roles in the Hezar Dastan, a TV series, and the Kamalolmolk, feature movie, as well as a role in 1991 as a blind Turkish princess in The Love Stricken (Delshodegan), a historical drama movie.

Having appeared in bit parts in some of her father's movies, Hatami's first lead film appearance was the title role in the 1996 film Leila, directed by Dariush Mehrjui. She received the Diploma of Honor for Best Actress from the 15th Fajr Film Festival.

In 1999, she married Ali Mosaffa, her co-star in Leila. They have two children, a son named Mani born in February 2007 and a daughter named Asal born in October 2008.

Her role in The Deserted Station (Istgah-e Matrouk) 2002 won the best actress award from the 26th Montreal World Film Festival. She has appeared in her husband's films, Portrait of a Lady Far Away (Sima-ye Zani Dar Doordast)2005 and The Last Step (Peleh Akhar) 2012. She also designed the sets and the costumes of The Last Step, which resulted in a nomination at the Fajr Film Festival for best production design and costume design. In 2012 A Separation (Jodaeiye Nader az Simin) won the Academy Award for best foreign film in which Hatami played the leading female role, which also earned her the Berlin Film Festival Award for the Best Actress in the same year.

In April 2014, she was announced as a member of the main competition jury at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival.
